Essay on Diwali:

Diwali is the festival of light. Diwali is popularly known as Deepavali. It is one of the major festivals celebrated by Hindus in India and all over the world.

This festival is celebrated during the Hindu lunisolar month Kartika between mid-October and mid-November. Diwali is a 5 days festival. It is usually celebrated 20 days after the Vijayadashmi or Dussehra festivals.

According to Hindus, Diwali is a festival that commemorates the return of Lord Ram to his Kingdom Ayodhya with his wife Sita and his brother Lakshmana after defeating Ravana in Lanka and serving for 14 years in exile.

This festival is an annual homecoming and bonding period not only for families but also for communities. Diwali symbolizes the spiritual victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance.

People clean, renovate and decorate their homes and workplaces with diyas (oil lamps) and rangolis. People light up clay lamps and decorate their homes and workplaces with different coloured designs. Rangoli is an art of colourful designs made from rice flour flower petals coloured rice or coloured sand. During this festival, people wear new dresses, illuminate their homes and workplaces with their ears and Rangoli.

They perform worship ceremonies of Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity and wealth. People share mithai sweets and gifts. People believe that this festival will bring prosperity, happiness, to their lives. Children, as well as men, celebrate by lighting up fireworks together on these days.

People forget disputes during this festival. They remove all kinds of feelings of hatred and bitterness. This festival tightens the bonding of friendships and relationships. Many merchants open new accounts. People visit each other’s houses and share joy and happiness. This delightful and auspicious festival is certainly one of the greatest and most glorious festivals in the world.
